Why most local business websites look great but lose customers?

Most visitors leave your site because your words don't answer their questions. Here is how I figure out what went wrong, and how you can fix your own copy today.

Hi, I'm Vikas

I have done my bachelors in Computer application giving me knowledge about the technical things related to copy writing and I have also done my masters in English which made me to start writing, which turned out to be my favourite thing. So writing is what I do now, and this site is where I put everything I learn about one specific thing: the words that are on local business websites.

Why this site exists

The same thing kept happening again and again and once I noticed it I could not stop noticing it. A plumber pays someone to build him a website and the result is perfectly good as the website looks clean, it loads quickly, and it even shows up on Google when somebody in his city goes searching for a plumber but still, hardly anybody calls.

Then you actually read the page and the reason becomes obvious. It tells you that the company offers quality service at affordable prices, that customer satisfaction is their motto, and that the business was established in 2009 with a vision of excellence. Every sentence is about the company, and not one of them answers the question the visitor walked in with.

Because the visitor only has four questions, and they are always the same four.

  • Can you come today?
  • How much will it cost?
  • Will that price change once you arrive?
  • Have you fixed this exact problem before?

The website was built properly. The words were never thought about at all, and that gap is what this site is about.

What you will find here

Guides on writing the words for local business websites, covering home pages, service pages, About pages, city pages, buttons, and contact forms. Everything is sorted into five sections, so you can go straight to the part that matches your business.

Every guide gives you wording you can copy, change, and put on your own page the same day. Not ideas about writing but Actual sentences.

How I write these guides

The whole method, in plain view

I would rather be honest here than impressive. I am not a famous copywriter and I have only been writing for about a year, so if you came looking for somebody with twenty years of agency work behind him, that is not me. What I do have is time, and the habit of looking at things closely.

For every guide I open real local business websites, usually twenty or thirty of them, and I read the words the way a customer would read them. I write down what appears on nearly all of them, and I write down what almost none of them do. Then I rewrite the weakest parts and explain, line by line, why each change was made.

There are no secrets in that, and nothing I cannot show you.

When I quote wording from a real website I never name the business or link to it, because the point is to teach rather than to embarrass a plumber who was let down by whoever built his site. And if I get something wrong, tell me. I will correct it, and I will say on the page that it was corrected.

Who this is for

Mostly small business owners who look after their own website, so if you can log in and edit a page, everything here is usable by you. It also works if you write websites for other people, because the examples do not change either way.

You do not need to know SEO and you do not need to know code and none of the guides here require you to use any of these things to make it work for you.

Why everything here is in plain English

A lot of marketing writing is built to sound clever rather than to be understood and that is why I try to avoid all of it, because simple words are what actually work on a local business website and it would be strange to teach something in such a way that nobody understand it.

So if you find a sentence on this site that you had to read twice, that is my mistake and not your which you can inform me about and I will work on it as soon as possible.

Get in touch

You can reach me through the contact page, and I do read everything that comes in, although I am one person so a reply can take a few days. If you want to point me at a website that needs a rewrite, send it over. Some of those turn into guides.
